I've used two of these in metal back boxes; they do work although I have had them both disappear from the network but got them back on again. The first disappeared after a couple of days but has now been working consistently for 3 weeks; the second also disappeared within a couple of days but has only been back for a day so can't report consistency. My wireless environment is poor, however despite it being a small apartment; I'm sure that doesn't help.
